Ricci is an homage to a childhood shows such as Little Bear, Franklin, Blue's Clues, The Land Before Time, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Adventures from the Book of Virtues, The Berenstein Bears, Between the Lions, Arthur, Dragon Tales, Zaboomafoo, Bear in the Big Blue House, Sagwa the Chinese Siamese Cat, and Barney & Friends which brought both academic and social education to my living room through the wonderful vehicle of talking animals. The characters in these shows often found an uncanny balance between being realistic and adorable, and after comparing their designs to, say, those of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, I can't help but feel that the classic charm has been lost. I tried to instill as much of it as I could into Ricci's design -- simple but substantial, immensely huggable but not overbearing, and eyes that aren't too big. (They might still be too big, though!)

Ricci's TV show would be broadcast on PBS Kids and focus on geography and world culture. He'd travel everywhere from Missouri to Malaysia to Moscow, all the while learning about each region's culture and participating in their festivities. If given the chance, I'd also make Ricci a bit genderfluid, just as willing to wear women's traditional clothing as men's and participating in all gender-specific activities. But that'd have to get through the censors and the parents, of course.
